A naturally occurring, harmful algal bloom is affecting the South Australian coastline, including Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and southern Yorke Peninsula.
The bloom is being driven by a marine heatwave – with sea temperatures about 2.5°C warmer than usual – combined with calm conditions, light winds and small swells.
Karenia mikimotoi does not cause long-term harmful effects in humans.
The last notable algal bloom of this type was recordedat Coffin Bay on Eyre Peninsula in 2014.
