Deep Sadness as Iconic Golden North Announces Relocation

Member for Stuart, Hon Geoff Brock MP has expressed deep disappointment following the announcement that Golden North will relocate its operations from Laura to Murray Bridge
over the next 12 months.

“For more than a century, Golden North Ice Cream has been part of the heart and soul of Laura – not just as an employer, but as a symbol of regional pride. Generations of families across the North have grown up with Golden North in their freezers and in their lives,” Mr Brock said.

“I know this has been an economic decision that they have to make but it doesn’t make it any easier knowing it will impact 80 staff in the peak of production, not to mention the transport industry and other trades”.

“My thoughts are first and foremost with the workers and their families, many of whom now face uncertainty about their future. We must ensure they are supported through this transition,” Mr Brock said.

Golden North has long been more than just a business – it has been a symbol of what regional South Australia can achieve. Its roots in the North have contributed enormously to the local economy and social fabric of our region.

I will be working closely with The Northern Areas Council, with the support of the State Government, who have announced a $1 million Community Infrastructure Program to help soften the blow and deliver lasting benefits to the town and surrounding communities.

“I will be advocating strongly to ensure this support reaches those most affected and that the people of Laura have a voice in shaping the region’s future,” Mr Brock said.

With such difficult and challenging times right now, with the drought and cost of living pressures, it is vital that we make sure that we soften the impact of this transition as much as possible.

The relocation is expected be completed by mid-2026
