Cooper Creek Crossing – Barge Announcement
It is extremely gratifying to share that, after many hours of lobbying—not only by myself, but also through the collective efforts of the Ministers for Infrastructure and Transport, Emergency Services, Primary Industries, the Treasurer, and the Premier—a long-term solution for a reliable barge at the Cooper Creek Crossing on the Birdsville Track has been secured. Funding for this vital infrastructure has now been confirmed as a joint initiative of the State and Federal Governments.
A new barge, to be sourced from Western Australia, will replace the existing vessel that has served the crossing for over 50 years. The new barge will be transported to Cooper Creek Crossing and installed at the site as soon as possible.
I would like to sincerely thank the many individuals who have shown patience and cooperation over recent months. Your honest and open discussions have been invaluable.
Following discussions I had with the Premier in Parliament, Minister Bourke, along with senior government officials met with pastoral operators at a community meeting at the Mungerannie Hotel, who shared their concerns and suggestions. These contributions were received with great enthusiasm by all who attended.
The scale of this flood event is truly historic. While it may take considerable time to fully subside, the impact will be far-reaching - providing critical support for primary producers and offering a significant long-term boost to regional tourism.
Finally, I wish to acknowledge the contributions of the many pastoralists throughout the region. In particular, I thank Sharon Oldfield from Mungerannie Station and David Bell from Dulkaninna Station. Without the insight and support of all involved, this important outcome would not have been possible. It has been a genuine learning journey for many within the government.
