Today in Parliament, I stood in support of the Select Committee’s report into Stillbirth in South Australia.
It was one of the most emotional moments I’ve experienced in the chamber.
As Member for Newland, Olivia Savvas MP, the Chair of the Committee, delivered her powerful address, I found myself deeply moved—not just by the confronting statistics, but by the memories it stirred of my own personal tragedies. Like so many others, I know the pain of losing a child. It never leaves you.
Every day in Australia, at least six babies are born still. As the Member pointed out, that’s twice the number of lives lost on our roads—yet stillbirth remains something we rarely speak about.
This report is a step toward changing that. It makes 22 important recommendations to improve care, support, and awareness—especially in regional areas like ours, where access to specialised services can be limited. It calls for better bereavement care, dedicated hospital spaces, and more education and research to help prevent these tragedies.
Stillbirth is not rare. It’s not something families should face in silence. And it’s not something we can ignore.
To the families across the Mid and Far North who have experienced this heartbreak—your voices matter. Your stories are helping shape a better future.
Let’s keep the conversation going. Let’s support each other. And let’s work together to ensure fewer families have to endure this pain.
