Gazanias Update 📢
Recently, I wrote to the Minister about the spread of Gazania along roadsides in our region. The Minister has confirmed that Gazania is a declared plant under the Landscape South Australia Act 2019, which means it cannot be sold or transported.
However, control requirements differ between regions. In the Northern and Yorke and South Australian Arid Lands regions, landholders are not legally required to control Gazania. Despite this, our local Landscape Boards are working hard to manage infestations and protect our environment.
✔️ Why is Gazania a problem?
It invades bushland and roadsides.
It can regrow and seed even after being dug out.
It releases chemicals that stop other plants from growing (allelopathy).
What can you do?
✅ If you find a Gazania, remove the flower or seed head first and bag it, then pull out the plant by the roots.
✅ Never leave flowering plants lying around – they can still produce seeds!
📢 The declaration for Gazania will be reviewed in 2026, and there will be opportunities for public input.

A big thank you to the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board, South Australian Arid Lands Landscape Board, and all agencies working to educate and manage this invasive weed.
Together, we can protect our landscapes!
